We could write 1000 blog posts in honour of International Women’s Day, covering everything from the state of women’s rights across the globe and legislative movements to Millie Bobby Brown’s recent call out of journalists for sexist reporting.
But all of those seemed a bit… bleak.
Instead, we chose for our IWD post to be a celebration of the women we love and admire in the industry, to celebrate those who are killing it globally, locally, and everything in between. We work with hundreds of brilliant, talented and inspiring women, and couldn’t possibly fit every name into a blog post - here is just a shortlist of icons. Let’s hear it for women in the arts and especially Whitney Houston, who is, famously, every woman.
Zakiyyah Deen
We worked with Zakiyyah on her first full length play, Why A Black Woman Will Never Be Prime Minister. It was all the things we love to represent; political, diverse, a strong female voice. It got great reviews and we can’t wait to see what Zakiyyah does next!
Chappell Roan
This year truly has been the Rise of the Midwest Princess with Chappell Roan’s career exploding into a worldwide success after a decade of working in the music industry. The BRIT International Song of the Year winner has time and time again used her celebrity status to shine light on important issues. As an openly lesbian performer who regularly chooses local drag queens to open as the supporting acts for her gigs, she vocally supports the trans community, demands trans rights, and also dedicated her BRIT award to trans artists. She also used her Grammy’s Best New Artist acceptance speech to call out the lack of healthcare provided to musicians by record labels.
Kelly Bishop
The Third Gilmore Girl re-stole our hearts this past year with the release of her memoir, and we’ve been moved by her reflections on life, the arts, and following your passion. At 81 she continues to act and write and be an inspiration to all of us.
Indhu Rubasingham
The first woman and first person of colour to be appointed Artistic Director of the National Theatre, it doesn’t get more iconic than that. Renowned for championing diverse voices, she brings bold, thought-provoking stories to the stage, inspiring the next generation of women to lead, create, and redefine the arts.
Jade Thirlwall
She’s the fantasy, she’s the IT Girl, she’s the angel of our dreams. Following her time in Little Mix, Jade has launched her solo career and she has us OBSESSED. Putting Simon Cowel on blast and speaking to her experience as a teenager in the music industry, she’s standing up for future artists and demanding a change to how young artists are treated. A powerful voice for women in every sense.
Arifa Akbar
A brilliant journalist and literary critic, shaping conversations on arts and culture with her insightful writing - she’s also great company on a press trip! Her upcoming book exploring a women's journey into the night, Wolf Moon, is on our must read list!
Charli XCX
Beatrice says… It's no secret that I think Charli XCX and everything she stood for with Brat Summer was nothing short of iconic in my humble opinion. After years of hard graft, she is finally getting the recognition she deserves for her bold, brave artistry. When accepting her Brit award, she stated "I am living proof that it takes a long time but you don't need to compromise your vision." Keep being yourself, Charli 💚
The Team behind Exeunt
We’re really enjoying the return of Exeunt with some really insightful long lead pieces, so shout out to Holly Williams (who wrote for our blog here), Natasha Tripney and Alice Saville.
Taylor Swift
Juliet says… A marketing mastermind, a brilliant songwriter, and all around light in the dark for girls and women across the globe. The Eras Tour, as I think I’ve mentioned before, was a Barbieland dream, and I’ll be thinking about it for many years to come.
...And of course all the wonderful women who work as part of our team at Mobius!
