MILES. at the Edinburgh Fringe: building a jazz drama’s reputation

PR · Summerhall, Edinburgh · 2025

The challenge

MILES. is a two-hander about Miles Davis and the making of Kind of Blue, staged by :Delirium and Lauren Reed Productions with Benjamin Akintuyosi as Davis and live trumpet from Jay Phelps. Its Edinburgh Fringe run needed to build the reviews and reputation that would carry the show beyond the festival — the profile that later underpinned its London transfer to Southwark Playhouse.

Our approach

We positioned the show at the meeting point of theatre and jazz, briefing theatre critics on the drama and briefing music writers and broadcasters on the score and Jay Phelps’s playing. We pitched across national press, Scottish media and specialist jazz outlets, and used interviews to tell the story behind the production.

What we did

— Secured reviews across national, Scottish and arts press
— Booked broadcast on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row, BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM
— Ran jazz-specialist coverage alongside mainstream theatre press
— Built the reviews base that supported the show’s later London run

Results

61 pieces of coverage, including 25 reviews, reaching a combined audience of 704 million. A five-star review from The Wee Review, four stars in The List, and coverage in the Guardian, The Times, the Scotsman and on BBC Radio 4 and Radio 3.

“A remarkable production about the recording of a remarkable album” — The Wee Review

“A soulful ode to the jazz genius behind Kind of Blue” — The Guardian
